Music 3.0 is R&D project funded by the program Avanza Contenidos of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. Its main goal is to develop an experimental web-based system for music creation, interaction and socialization. Such system should integrate the most recent technologies of the Web 2.0, advanced on-line tools for music creation, and large sound and music repositories. For such system there will be a need to develop social networking models specific for music, models for the treatment of music content and also models for the creation of new content.

The result will be a Web portal which will allow any user, or software application, to participate in a musical social network, easily accessing a wide range of musical content and being able to create and share new content using new concepts and adapted to the user’s profile. Continue reading

Politically engaged music is not only a consequence of history or nostalgia, but can be timely and pertinent commentary on our contemporary world. Another Protest Song is a collaborative project which uses the social networking space of the internet to archive and debate contemporary protest music. The project went public in late May and has become a daily/weekly growing archive with a number of original protest songs uploaded and shared by you the user, and other ideological persuaders. Olinda is a prototype digital radio that uses modular hardware that is customizable for each user. It has your social network built in, showing you the stations your friends are listening to. Six lights on Olinda show when a close friend is listening to the radio, using wifi and Radio Pop, the BBC’s website for sharing ‘now playing’ information. Each light is a button: you can tune in to listen along with them, discovering new stations via your social network.

A friend will always appear at the same light, so you can write or draw on the radio to label it, and the lights are bright so you’ll know a friend has started listening from across the room. Continue reading

You control delay, volume and pitch, and the program does the harmony. Combinations of low volume bass and flute or sax sound pretty nice.
