Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman will exhibit Are We there Yet? — a sound work, video installation and public work — at gallery Souzoukukan9001, ZAIM gallery and in public space in Yokohama Japan for Dislocate 08 the International Festival for Art, Technology and Locality, Yokohama/Tokyo. Are We there Yet? is a sound map of stories collected from passengers on Yokohama’s blue line, mapping travelers’ internal states in real space. Visitors can download MP3 sound files and travel the subway inhabiting riders’ stories at the exact physical location they took place. In the gallery exhibition the sound map is extended into an interactive video and sound installation, which layers public and private perceptions of the subway. The increasing accuracy of satellite navigation strives to eliminate the possibility of human error, but it also produces a sense of dislocation from one’s immediate environment by abstracting location as the coordinates of longitude and latitude. Yolande Harris invites you to the events that mark the culmination of her artist residence project Sun Run Sun: Sonic Navigations at the Netherlands Media Art Institute in collaboration with STEIM in Amsterdam.

“The project development over the last four months has been intense and varied, and the months of March and April hold the exhibitions and performances of five related works on the theme of navigation technologies, environment and sound. The central work is the Satellite Sounders, small portable instruments for hearing the live data from the GPS satellite network. These can be tried out by walking along the canals around NIMk and are part of the upcoming Territorial Phantom exhibition there. The two installation pieces, Dead Reckoning and Navigating by Circles present spaces of intuitive navigation in sound and video, in Amsterdam and Den Haag.” Continue reading

I often describe people I write about here at Serial Consign as friends and peers and both of these terms definitely apply to David McCallum. David is a Toronto-based artist and musician whose subverts electronic hardware, software and networks towards playful and performative ends. He has a background in physics and music and received a Masters in Art and Technology from Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden.

I met David in 2006 at Mutek, and got to know him and his work through his excellent curation of our Vague Terrain issue on locative media. David’s creative practice is quite varied, and perusal of his recent work reveals interests in improv performance, modified timepieces and insect orchestras. Continue reading
