Breakthrough — an experimental 12 hour event distributed across Berlin locations, inter-network and radio space :: June 27, 2009; 12 noon – midnight.

The term breakthrough describes a sudden shift in understanding or technologies, and, finally, a clearing (Lichtung), an entry into unknown and unmapped territories. An enclosure is breached allowing access to another, totally unforeseen state or space. Communication is thus implied, a new form of exchange, perhaps between two otherwise unconnected domains, between the living and the dead, between many worlds. What does the sheer possibility of a breakthrough imply for communication between the past and the future?

Breakthrough, as event, signals a change in direction, a pointing towards new ways of actively describing and creating the world. Continue reading

MiSS Four – An improvisatory challenge from the Sonic Arts Research Centre :: February 21, 2009; 1:00 – 3:00 pm (free): Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast.

This event forms part of 24 Fragments – 24 hours of music, neuroscience and performance at 24 sites across the UK. SARC will be linked with all 24 UK sites, but will have a direct artistic exchange with Bristol’s watershed where poetry and voice works by Bristol based performers, led by Hewlett Packard South West fellow Ralph Hoyte will be presented.

Sound artist Paul Stapleton, violinist Gascia Ouzounian and improvisers Pedro Rebelo and Franziska Schroeder will be teaming up for a feast of sonic explorations during the 24 Fragments event, a 24-hour festival funded by The Wellcome Trust. The concert will take place in the unique Sonic Laboratory, a purpose-built, variable acoustic space, known for its experiments in sound diffusion and ground-breaking compositional and performance work. From August 18 to September 6, 1997, Australia’s The Listening Room presented Sensorium Connect / Body Morph, a generative composition by Andrew Garton and comprised of sounds sampled from performances by Stelarc. Sensorium Connect was the first Listening Room project entirely produced for online and was streamed for its entire six week duration.

On January 11, KunstRadio broadcasts an entirely new version of this work. Sensorium Re-Connected commemorates the work of The Listening Room and the contribution this piece made to furthering radio and sound art online in Australia. Continue reading

Within the context of EU Culture 2007 project COMEDIA, the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen’s University Belfast
is hosting an open platform on network music performance. Disparate Bodies 3.0 is a developmental process for exploring musical interactions in geographically displaced sites. The Open Platform is a forum for the exploration of key issues
in “playing apart”: Performance Cues, Distributed Electronic Scores, Remote Monitoring, Performance Avatars and Dramaturgy. The work is developed through live events and online resources at the project’s website which contains detailed information on the project, events, blogs, as well as links to streams and recorded media. Gridjam is an experimental project that brings together a visual artist, composer, musicians and computer and cyber-infrastructure scientists to produce a real-time, geographically distributed multimedia event utilizing the new high-speed international LambdaRail fiber optic network. What’s the Future for Musicians? Today’s music landscape is filled with both excitement and foreboding. With so many new technologies and ways to promote and distribute music, how do performers, composers, songwriters and independent labels know how to participate, who to trust, and what is most effective?

In the Future of Music seminar musicians from all genres — classical, jazz, rock, folk and hip-hop — will learn about a range of internet-based promotion and distribution options, how to navigate the health insurance landscape, the importance of open internet structures and how copyright law and business models are affecting how musicians will be compensated in the digital future. Stanford’s laptop orchestra, with their Mac books programmed to create sound, notes, and music, performed last Tuesday night, April 29th, at Stanford University in a musical collaboration with China. Assistant Professor Ge Wang, brought the idea of a laptop orchestra to Stanford this year. Previously a graduate student at Princeton, where the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) was founded, Professor Wang developed a new music programming language called ChucK, which has been used extensively by PLOrk.
