Harvestworks’ New York Electronic Arts Festival:: with exhibitions, concerts and workshops from May 27, 2010 to Sep 25, 2010 :: in collaboration with The National Park Service, River to River Festival, Trinity Wall Street, Roulette and other partners, and sponsored by Tekserve, New York’s Largest Independent Apple Store and Service Facility. The festival is a summer series of concerts, workshops, and exhibitions centered on the cutting-edge work being done at the intersection of art and technology.

For the first time the Festival will take place outside of galleries and concert halls, and will explore the geography of the island through sound and related technology, re-imagining the architecture and history of the spaces. Some of Governors Island’s public spaces will be transformed into a series of sound landscapes where the public can appreciate a new dimension to the visual and auditory environment. Pianola City Music: Playing a Cityscape as a Piano Score ::

Pianola City Music attempts to overcome the almost inevitable urge to program and computerize our most imaginative ideas.

A physical model of the Dutch city of Eindhoven is rolled onto a drum and attached to a piano, so that its buildings hit the piano keys in a specific rhythm and the physical pattern of the city becomes expressed into a unique sound. The cityscape Eindhoven apparently produces a quite chaotic soundscape, although this might also be influenced by the methodology of it all, of which another beautiful example includes SolarBeat.

Moori, by Haeyoung Kim, is an interactive audience participatory audio-visual performance. By incorporating multiple modes of messaging on a mobile phone, users tell their stories to guided questions by the performer. User data is processed to generate algorithmic audio and visuals while creating a larger narrative. This collaboration creates dialog among the performer and audience members and suggests new possibilities that can exist through the combination of algorithmic animation, audio and language. SoundWalk 2011: Call for Submissions :: Artists who, in any manner, utilize sound in their work are invited to submit to the Eighth Annual SoundWalk event to be held in Long Beach CA on Saturday, October 1, 2011. Please visit www.soundwalk.org for submission requirements and details.

SoundWalk is an ear-oriented art event produced annually by the Long Beach artist group, FLOOD. The evening operates under the concept of a five-hour audioscopic experience as provided by sound art located in various indoor and outdoor spaces situated in Downtown Long Beach. The artwork combines, in multiple ways, a wide range of media as well as other interplayful sensory elements. There are sculptures, environments, installations, both interactive and passive, as well as scheduled performances.

Deadline for submissions is Friday, July 1st, 2010.

CTRL+ALT+REPEAT is an experimental music series that focuses on cutting-edge electronic music, improvisation, contemporary classical music, and sound art. The Spring 2011 edition will feature Morton Feldman’s 1951 string quartet Structures and Christina Kubisch’s Vibrations for string quartet and vibrators, performed by the Community MusicWorks Players alongside performances by Ernst Karel, Lyn Goeringer and Mem1. This concert is presented in conjunction with Community MusicWorks and is made possible in part by a grant from the Brown University Creative Arts Council.

Calabi Portal Project — a laboratory for ideas and the imagination :: Call for Proposals — No Deadline.

This competition is open to visionary designers, artists, architects, and scientists, and any collaborative combination. All designs will be theoretical. No background or experience in engineering, construction, or actual fabrication materials is required as the structure will be self-generating and assembling. The challenge is to conceive of the possibilities of an architectural visualization of 10 dimensional space incorporating the six dimensional Calabi-Yau manifold. The proposed structure is to take the form of what we loosely describe as a “Tower”, and is open to interpretation. It may also contain or emanate light and sound.

Radius will broadcast Episode 07: Foradius by Sturgen — César Rodrigues and David Arantes, a duo from Portugal. Their music explores a vast amount of sonic rhythmics where a techno-trance universe is combined with a constant noise attitude.

Foradius is a work created specifically for broadcast on Radius. The two members of Sturqen worked independently of each other using Portuguese radio transmissions as source material. The fragmented radio clips were then digitally processed and joined together to create the 18-minute composition. Continue reading

Trimpin premieres The Gurs Zyklus at Stanford University’s Memorial Auditorium on May 9, 2011 as part of Stanford Lively Arts’ 2010-11 Season.

The Gurs Zyklus (Gurs Cycle) is a performance that combines instrumental and vocal music, sculpture, and spoken word. In some ways, it is a culmination of many aspects of Trimpin’s career and personal biography, drawing together elements of his childhood in Germany, his artistic practice as an instrument-maker and the history of the internment camp at Gurs, near the Spanish-French border. Born in Istein, Germany (now Efringen-Kirchen) in 1951, Trimpin was haunted by the camp at Gurs, where Jews from Istein were interned during World War II. As an adult, he worked with composer Conlon Nancarrow, who revealed that he had been held at Gurs during the Spanish Civil War. Continue reading
