Watermill Center: Call for Proposals for Fall 2010/Spring 2011 Residency Program :: Long Island, NY US :: Application Deadline: June 25, 2010

The Watermill Center is accepting proposals from emerging artists from all over the world as part of its Fall and Spring Residency Program. Applicants will be considered for residencies during Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. Watermill embraces ambitious proposals from all art disciplines that push the boundaries of existing international artistic practice. Watermill encourages the exploration of those innovative ideas throughout The Watermill Center facility and its six acres of grounds on the East End of Long Island, New York. This unique facility, founded by Robert Wilson, houses studios that double as galleries, The Watermill Collection of fine art and artifacts from Stone Age to contemporary day, a resource library, and communal living areas.

Applications are reviewed by an international Selection Committee that includes arts leaders Michael Morris, Nike Wagner, Alanna Heiss, and Marina Abramovic, as well as those from the social sciences, such as Ida Nicolaisen and Richard Sennett. Watermill encourages proposals from artists based within and outside the U.S., and offers a strong international and U.S. based network of associates as a continued benefit of the residency. Artists who have participated in this program have gone on to perform at various venues throughout the world including Door Studios in Paris and The Danou Festival in Austria, as well as New York City venues including Performa, LaMama, The New York International Fringe Festival, New Island Festival – Governors Island, Park Avenue Armory, and Dance New Amsterdam.

About the Residency Program

Residencies can range from one to four weeks and are scheduled throughout the Fall (September-December) and Spring (February-June). As the Center seamlessly combines performance and rehearsal sites with working and communal living spaces, the areas for studio practice are flexible and can be adapted for the residency needs. In addition to the facility, the Center is situated on six-acres of landscaped grounds with outdoor performance areas.

All residencies conduct an ‘Open Rehearsal’ or public presentation to share the working process. The Center can also arrange educational components or collaborative partnerships with the community. Concurrent with the residencies, Watermill Center staff conduct tours of the facilities, grounds and collection, open library hours, as well as educational and outreach programs.

The Watermill Center is thrilled to announce residency partnerships with The New York Theatre Workshop, Métamatic Research Initiative, and The Summer Play Festival. Each partnership offers a different collaboration. These partnerships are in addition to Watermill’s existing Residency Program.
