From 17 January through to 14 February 2010 the Foundation for Visual Arts Middelburg (Stichting Beeldende Kunst Middelburg) will present American artist Mark Bain’s exhibition orbitor at De Vleeshal, on the Markt. The exhibition’s opening, on 16 January at 5 p.m., will be marked by an audio performance by Mark Bain.

In orbitor, Mark Bain uses the De Vleeshal itself, once Middelburg’s town hall, as an instrument. As do all buildings, De Vleeshal produces sound: the resonant history of different materials in time and space. Here electricity, radio waves and other social systems continually circulate; hidden movements of which we are not always aware. Continue reading

1,444 minutes is the precise time it takes to move from one day to the next. Within this small space of time, it’s possible for a personal or even global change to occur. While many of us attempt to plan our lives and predict our individual or situational future, much of what happens is left to unknown devices. In the same vein, the upcoming project ONEthousand.four. – hundredANDfortyFour.minutes is a new generative net.art and sound work that is left to an unknown author to score. It is an emergent or behavioral musical system that commits to few parameters. Composer John Cage worked with a similar system he called “chance operations”. By using the I Ching to make compositional and artistic decisions, Cage was able to free himself and the work from personal likes, dislikes and bias. Continue reading

Republic! Just in time programming music in networks. Algorithms as letters; acoustic code art; writing programs while they run. Conversational programming in a networked ensemble.

Already in the 1960s, conversational programming languages arose in the intersection of telecommunications, programming and conputer experiments. As graphical interfaces dominate the interaction with computers today, the literary aspects of programming have taken the back seat. Algorithmic sound synthesis have given this form of improvisation an interesting objective: in acoustics we depend on experiments. Programming becomes part of algorithmic music, and not just its preparation. Continue reading

Videotage is proud to present Hong Kong-based Portuguese artist Joao Vasco Paiva as the first selected artist-in-residence of fuse:: residency program 2010. The objective of fuse:: residency program has always been encouraging individuals interested in the field of new media art, be it art & technology, art & science or art & anything, to create new works. With the support from Videotage, Joao Vasco Paiva will bring the audience a new sculptural sound installation Chirps, through which he creates a score by determining rules.

The prototype of the work (v1) was presented in the Microwave International New Media Art Festival 2009 in which a set of toy birds performed a sequence of calls and movement interfered by the passers-by at the lobby of Langham Hotel, while this time, Vasco has made the toy birds migrate to the raw space of Videotage where they would react to the motion and sound of a new player – a real mynah bird. From art galleries to noise venues, the Loud Objects stage their physical approaches to the construction of sound. Regular staples of the New York City experimental scene, they create music that spans electroacoustic, improvisation and noise. Their performances, focused on sound from programmed microchips, have ranged from live circuit constructions on overhead projectors and slide projectors, to soldering atop a 24-light bulb fluorescent podium, and later with modified fluorescent light guitars. In a recent article in the Atlantic Magazine Jim Giles, a writer based in San Francisco, writes of the efforts of Richard Hofstetter, a beetle expert at Northern Arizona University, to combat the Spruce ips, a species of bark beetle, that has carved a delta of channels into the underside of stand upon stand of spruce trees in order to feed off the spruce tree’s sap.

For years, entomologists have studied the chemicals that the beetles release for mating and communicating, hoping that they could be manipulated as a deterrent or used for control but this approach had limited success. Then in early 2005, Hofstetter met Reagan McGuire, a former truck driver who had been thinking about the bark-beetle epidemic. McQuire thought that a military crowd-control device he had read about, which emits powerful pulses of sound, might be used to kill the insects.
