DVICE has a post that shows photos of seven turntables for eccentric millionaires. When archaeologists dig up the current layer of civilization a million years from now, they’ll stumble upon anvil-heavy discs of silver and gold, delicate Lucite sculptures, strange materials juxtaposed with delicate arm-like tendrils — all sporting a wheel-like centerpiece. Were these intricately crafted edifices part of a temple honoring the invention of the wheel? No, dear archaeologist: they were turntables, altars to those deities with the most golden of ears, platforms upon which huge piles of currency were burned.

The evolution of pop music could be set to take another turn with the introduction of Cybraphon, a machine that plays different music depending on its mood. Cybraphon spends its day surfing the internet, looking at Google and its own Facebook page, every website hit it gets the happier it becomes. The machine was created by avant-garde musical collective Found who teamed up with Professor Simon Kirby from Edinburgh University.

EvoMUSART 2010 is the eight workshop of the EvoNet working group on Evolutionary Music and Art. Following the success of previous events and the growth of interest in the field, the main goal of EvoMUSART 2010 is to bring together researchers who are using biologically inspired techniques for artistic tasks, providing the opportunity to promote, present and discuss ongoing work in this area.

6th Annual Conflux Festival :: Submissions Deadline: August 15.

Conflux, the art and technology festival for the creative exploration of urban public space, is pleased to announce the 6th annual Conflux Festival will take place from September 17-20, 2009. The festival, produced by Glowlab, will be headquartered in Manhattan with partner and host, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

Conflux will organize a user-generated open format event on Sunday September 20th, 2009 from 10am-6pm. Through an open submissions process, ConfluxCity will provide a platform for artists, urban geographers, technologists and others to organize and produce innovative activities dedicated to the examination, celebration and (re)construction of everyday urban life.

2009 is the centenary of the publication of The Plan of Chicago. The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago: A Multi-Sensory Journey Through Chicago and Its Neighborhoods corresponds with the celebration of this historic event. An interactive installation at the Chicago Cultural Center Visitor Information Center (77 E. Randolph Street), The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago is part of the citywide summer tourism initiative, Explore Chicago: Take A Neighborhood Vacation (June 1–September 30). More than 40 artists and organizations have joined in creating this exploration of Chicago through the five senses.

Visitors and locals can experience Chicago imagery, sounds, fragrances, flavors and textures captured in miniature neighborhood scenes such as a mapping of the tastes and recipes of Chinatown, and an exploration of East Garfield Park candy. SPC’s participating artists and organizations have designed installation pieces which invite people to interact with the sensory “artifacts” of Chicago in creative and imaginative ways, and to think about synesthetic connections with things that relate to Chicago. The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago is commissioned by the City of Chicago, and it is co-curated by Annie Heckman and Dan Godston. Continue reading
