Electronic Music Foundation presents Sound in the Frying Pan — Eight sound artists board the lightship Frying Pan for a three-day event of site-specific compositions :: May 15, 2009; 7:00 pm; May 16, 17; 12:00 – 9:00 pm :: Lightship Frying Pan, Pier 66, West Side Highway (at 26th Street), New York City.

Jessica Feldman’s Sirens plays off the conflict between warning sailors, the original function of the lightship, and the natural seduction of sound :: Melissa Clarke, Ben Owen and Shimpei Takeda’s Underfoot recreates the bottom of the Hudson River within the ship with projections, sound and reflective materials composed of geographical data.

Bart Bridger Woodstrup’s Gathering Lore is a weather station that translates current climate conditions into sound.

Richard Garet’s Inner-Outer is a video projection of light reflections on water and a sonic-construction of underwater recordings.

Suzanne Thorpe and Philip White’s Balancing Act creates a psychoacoustic composition using the list of the ship and the location of the listener.

BIOGRAPHIES

Melissa F. Clarke, multi-media artist, has co-produced and directed two feature length films. Her work has been exhibited at venues such as the Queens Museum of Art Gallery at Bullova Center and Issue Project Room.

Jessica Feldman is an interdisciplinary sound-artist whose work has received awards from LMCC, the Max Kade Foundation, the Bronx River Art Center, Meet the Composer, and the Experimental Television Center.

Richard Garet, sound artist, video artist, and painter, explores the phenomena found and produced in nature’s and human’s relationship with artificial and natural environments. His work has been shown in New York, London, Barcelona, Sydney, and Puerto Rico.

Ben Owen, cross-media artist, is interested in the spatial aspects of existing sound fields, intervened environments, and the projection and reflection of light. His work has been presented at The Kitchen, free103point9 Wave Farm, Millennium Film Workshop, White Box Gallery, 106BLDG30, Tonic, Engine 27, the 6 & B Community Garden, Issue Project Room, Diapason, and The Tank.

Shimpei Takeda works with photography, video, and improvisational performance. His work has been presented at the Essl Collection of Contemporary Art, Austin Museum of Art, Weisman Art Museum, Schenectady Museum & Suits-bueche Planetarium, and in New York City at Issue Project Room, the Tank, and Experimental Intermedia Foundation.

Suzanne Thorpe, musician, composer, and sound artist, enjoys working within the peripheral consciousness, exposing coexisting perspectives and concurrent realities. She has performed internationally with musicians such as Chris Brown, Pauline Oliveros, Annette Krebs, Ulrich Krieger, Gino Robair, David Dove, the Wounded Knees, J Mascis, and Mercury Rev.

Philip White, media artist, electricist, explores psychoacoustic phenomena with feedback and light. His works have been shown throughout the US and Germany, including performances or exhibitions at The Stone (NYC), Sonic Circuits (DC), Redux New Media Festival (Charleston, SC) and Gallerie Neurotitan (Berlin).
