New music series DARMSTADT “Classics of the Avant Garde” celebrates its 4th anniversary with an annual performance of Terry Riley’s groundbreaking work, In C (1964). Darmstadt’s curators invite a broad range of musicians and media artists across New York’s performance community to participate in a rendering which New York Times critic Allan Kozinn recently dubbed as “the most vital, audacious, and energizing performance of the work I’ve ever heard.”
Performers include Christine Bard, Shelley Burgon, Jason Cady, Luke Dubois, Bradley Eros, Lesley Flanigan, Gisburg, Nick Hallett, Zach Layton, David Linton, Emily Manzo, Shahin Motia, Dafna Naftali, Evan Rapport, Joshua Rubin, David Soldier, Hans Tammen, Ryan Tracy, Katherine Young, Alex Waterman and many others!
Darmstadt “Classics of the Avant Garde” is the Brooklyn-based contemporary music series led by composer-musicians Zach Layton and Nick Hallett which presents the best of New York City’s live experimental music and multimedia. Darmstadt began as a “listening party” of avant-garde recordings before quickly evolving into a live performance series, and in 2007 was included in the New York TImes Best of New Music rundown. Darmstadt regularly hosts its concerts and DJ sets at Galapagos Art Space, while its founders both create and curate work for such institutions as PS1, The Kitchen, Spiegeltent, and The Stone. This past October, Darmstadt mounted a historical survey of experimental music entitled Essential Repertoire, at ISSUE Project Room. Darmstadt’s memorable DJ sets have been requested at the upcoming Performa Metal Ball, the Brooklyn Academy of Music for Steve Reich’s 70th birthday and at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival.
